What Is an IP to Timezone Lookup?

An IP to timezone lookup estimates the time zone connected to a public IPv4 or IPv6 address. The result uses an IANA time zone name such as Asia/Kolkata, Europe/London, or America/New_York. IANA names are more useful than a simple label such as IST or CST because short labels can mean different things in different countries.

The lookup can also show the current local time, UTC offset, country, region, city, and approximate coordinates associated with the network. This information describes an estimated network area. It does not reveal a person's exact position, home address, identity, or device clock.

The free tool from ipdnslookup accepts an IP address or domain name. A domain is resolved to a public address before the timezone check.

How IP to Timezone Lookup Works

Public IP addresses are assigned in ranges to internet providers, hosting companies, mobile carriers, public services, and other organizations. Geolocation reference data connects many of those ranges with an approximate country, subdivision, city, coordinates, and timezone. The submitted address is matched against those ranges to find the most specific available record.

The timezone is returned as a name from the IANA Time Zone Database. The IANA time zone page explains the global database used by operating systems and software. A name such as America/New_York includes rules that can change its UTC offset during daylight-saving time. A fixed value such as UTC-05:00 does not describe those seasonal rules by itself.

After finding the IANA name, the tool uses the current date and the zone's rules to calculate the local clock, UTC offset, and abbreviation. This matters because America/New_York is normally UTC-05:00 in standard time and UTC-04:00 during daylight-saving time. The current offset can therefore change even though the IANA name stays the same.

For a domain, one public DNS answer is checked. Large websites may use addresses in several regions, so the result can describe one server location rather than the company office.

Some valid results will not include a city, postal code, region, or coordinates. Missing fields are better than invented values. The timezone can also be wrong when an address was recently transferred, a provider routes traffic through another region, or the reference database has not yet received a correction.

Accuracy, Data Source, and Privacy

IP timezone finder results are estimates based on network ranges. Country matches are generally more dependable than city matches, but no location field should be treated as GPS data. The marker on the map represents a broad network area and not a street address.

This product includes GeoLite Data created by MaxMind, available from MaxMind. GeoLite is a free geolocation dataset and can be less accurate than paid location products. The database is updated periodically because address assignments and network routing change over time.

The lookup is processed using reference data stored with the service. The address is not submitted to MaxMind's live web API for each lookup. Normal server security logs may still record requests according to the site's privacy policy. Avoid entering or publishing an address when you do not have a valid reason to process it.
